The Customer
Lane, Alton & Horst LLC (LAH) is engaged in the general practice of law. Its litigation practice is extensive, including the defense of professional liability claims against physicians and hospitals, lawyers, judges, accountants, architects and engineers. LAH built their legal reputation through hard work and quality legal services, setting a standard for total value, while handing down through four generations a philosophy designed to provide personalized attention tailored to meet each client’s needs.

The Challenge
LAH was looking to replace an outdated and error-prone document management and e-mail system (Groupwise) with an integrated software solution. Their top priorities included emphasis on lowest total cost of ownership, reuse of existing hardware where possible and expedient conversion from existing system to a new system. The existing system had approximately 100 users and had been plagued with problems resulting from software updates.

The Solution
The primary solution, LEGAL Counsel, was developed by Peters Technology Group specifically for the legal industry and leverages IBM’s Lotus Document Manger. Complementing the Lotus Document Manger, Promevo implemented Lotus Notes Messaging on an IBM iSeries server. PreferredPartner managed the middleware licensing and ensured “best of breed” business partners were engaged based on the customers requirements. PreferredPartner also sourced the conversion tools used by Promevo to convert Novell to Lotus Notes (Binary Tree Common Migration Tool licenses).

Lotus Notes and Domino 6.5.4 with Domino Document Manager 6.5.1 were selected after considering other options due to its integration, web server security and simple conversion tools available from Binary Tree. LAH was able to upgrade its existing iSeries server to provide necessary Domino Messaging server capacity and required only a single new server for Domino Document Management capabilities.

Long-term results from this solution include increased efficiency/productivity, improved communications and strong ROI due to reuse of existing hardware. In the short-term, customer savings have been achieved through the ability of Domino to act as a private certificate authority, allowing the customer to issue SSL certificates for both new servers for encryption of internet traffic without paying a 3rd party certificate vendor, providing at least $700 in savings annually.

 

This teaming solution shows how three IBM Business Partners with complementary skill sets have worked together to provide a valuable and highly repeatable solution for the SMB market.
